# BaZi without birth time: reading three pillars

You can still work with BaZi without a birth time: choose unknown time and you get the year, month and day pillars and the day master, with the hour left open. “Born in the morning” and “born at 10:20” support different inputs, though. With an unknown birth time, first separate what the record says from what you are estimating.

## Is it the hour or the date that is unknown?

“I don't know my birth time” can describe three different situations:

- The date is certain, and the whole time is missing.
- Only “morning”, or one traditional two-hour period, is remembered.
- The date itself has competing accounts.

Note where each account comes from: a birth record, a note made at the time, or a later memory. Conflicting accounts can stay side by side while you look into them.

If the disagreement concerns a birth close to midnight, check the date too. A three-pillar result still depends on the date you enter; choosing unknown time cannot decide which day is correct. When new evidence appears, note whether you changed the date, the time or the time zone, so a difference between two calculations can be explained.

## Which setting should you choose for BaZi without a birth time?

The [free BaZi calculator](https://multifate.com/tools/bazi) asks how precise the recorded time is: Exact clock time, Two-hour period (shichen) or Birth time unknown. Choose what the evidence supports.

The Hong Kong Observatory lists Si as 09:00 to 11:00 and Wu as 11:00 to 13:00, so “morning” does not identify one period. A two-hour period records an interval, not the minute within it, and a form that accepts minutes cannot make vague evidence precise.

> **Tip** If all you know is “nearly noon”, write those words next to the setting you chose instead of turning them into a clock time such as 11:30.

## Do calendar and time zone still matter without an hour?

Yes. The date still needs its calendar and the birthplace time zone; [how to calculate BaZi](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/how-to-check) walks through each field.

- A lunar record goes into lunar input, with Leap month selected where the record marks one; the same numbers entered as solar give a different day.
- The zone your browser detects describes where the device is now, not necessarily the birthplace.
- Around a daylight-saving change, an exact clock time can repeat or not exist; the form asks you to choose or correct it.
- Coordinate correction is a separate choice with a preview, and it cannot recover a missing hour: unknown-time results use civil time with no correction applied.

These settings shape how the known inputs are calculated. None of them adds information the original record lacks.

## What does a three-pillar BaZi chart show?

With Birth time unknown, the result shows the year, month and day pillars, the day master and the hidden stems of those pillars. It leaves out the hour pillar and the four-pillar element totals.

In this example, the same birth date is calculated twice\. The unknown\-time row leaves the hour slot empty and shows no element shares; both rows have the same day pillar and day master\.

Three pillars still let you:

- Tell the heavenly stems from the earthly branches.
- Find the day stem, which is the day master.
- Check the date and input mode in the calculation receipt.

## What if two remembered times fall in different hours?

A teaching example, not a real record: one recollection says 10:50, another says 11:10, with the same date and time zone. In the usual two-hour periods the Hong Kong Observatory lists, 10:50 falls in Si (巳) and 11:10 in Wu (午).

In the close\-up strip, the 11:00 boundary sits between the two candidates: twenty minutes apart, two different periods\.

1. **Calculate each candidate**: Run 10:50 and 11:10 as separate calculations.
2. **Label and save**: Keep each set of inputs with its receipt, labeled candidate A or B.
3. **Check any correction**: If coordinate correction is on, check the corrected times against the boundary too.
4. **Compare the changed field**: Look at the field that changed first, then at any explanation that depends on it.
5. **Keep what both agree on**: Anything the two results share holds for both candidates; what differs stays open.

## Leave room for better evidence

When a reliable time turns up, update the matching record, recalculate and check the year, month and day pillars and the day master, especially near a solar-term or day boundary. Keep each trial labeled so it stays a trial instead of becoming “the time I was born.”

## BaZi without a birth time: common questions

### Should I enter noon if I don't know my birth time?

No. Choose Birth time unknown. The calculator uses noon as an internal calculation anchor and does not output it as your birth time; typing noon yourself would create an hour pillar your record does not support.

### Can I pick a two-hour period if I only know I was born in the morning?

Morning can cover several periods, so keep the original range. Choose a two-hour period only when the evidence names one. Otherwise use three pillars and, if needed, label separate times as candidates.

### Is the day master certain without a birth time?

The day master comes from the day pillar calculated for the entered date. Record any doubt about the date or calendar. If a reliable time is found, recalculate and check the result, especially near a day boundary; near a solar-term boundary, also check the year and month pillars.

### What can a three-pillar chart tell me?

It shows the year, month and day pillars, their hidden stems and the day master. It leaves out the hour pillar and the element totals, so conclusions that depend on the hour wait for a reliable time. The free calculator does not show strength, luck cycles, annual cycles or auxiliary stars in either mode.
