# Day master element: how the five elements relate

Your day master element is the element of your day stem, and every other element is read by how it relates to that one. Ren is always Water, yet it generates a Jia Wood day master and controls a Bing Fire one: the character stays the same while the comparison changes.

**Key points**

- Your day master element is the element of your day stem: Jia and Yi are Wood, Bing and Ding Fire, Wu and Ji Earth, Geng and Xin Metal, Ren and Gui Water.
- From that reference every other element is one of five relationships: generates me, same as me, I generate, I control, controls me.
- Arrows run one way, and the same stem changes relationship when the day master changes: Ren Water generates a Jia day master but controls a Bing one.
- Element shares are a separate question: a missing or small element is not an instruction to add it.

## What is your day master element?

Open the [free BaZi calculator](https://multifate.com/tools/bazi), find the stem of your day pillar and look it up in the table below. That one stem is your [BaZi day master](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/day-master), and its element is your day master element; the calculator's Day master field also shows that stem with its element. The year animal and the longest element bar describe other things.

| Element | Yang stem | Yin stem |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Wood | Jia 甲 | Yi 乙 |
| Fire | Bing 丙 | Ding 丁 |
| Earth | Wu 戊 | Ji 己 |
| Metal | Geng 庚 | Xin 辛 |
| Water | Ren 壬 | Gui 癸 |

Jia and Yi are both Wood, but Jia is yang and Yi is yin. You can group them as Wood while you learn the five relationships. Polarity matters once those relationships are split into ten names, so keep the stem in your notes, not just “Wood”.

## How do the generating and controlling arrows work?

Two cycles run through the same five elements in different orders, and every arrow points one way. What the five categories are is covered in [BaZi five elements](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/five-elements); here you only need the order.

![Two arrow rings: generating runs Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water; controlling runs Wood, Earth, Water, Fire, Metal](https://multifate.com/images/guides/bazi/figures/five-elements-en-v1-1200x608.webp)

Read one ring at a time and follow its arrows clockwise\. Both rings hold the same five elements in a different order, so an arrow from one ring says nothing about the other\.

- Generating: Wood to Fire to Earth to Metal to Water, and back to Wood.
- Controlling: Wood to Earth to Water to Fire to Metal, and back to Wood.

The arrows do not reverse. Water generates Wood, but Wood does not generate Water; Wood controls Earth, but Earth does not control Wood. Generating and controlling are directional relationships in a traditional system, and Zi Ping Zhen Quan discusses them together. Read the direction first and its role in a chart later; calling generating good and controlling bad loses most of what they describe.

## Five relationships around Jia Wood

Take a Jia day master and let “me” mean Wood. Water generates Wood, so Water generates me. Wood generates Fire, so Fire is what I generate. Metal controls Wood, so Metal controls me. Wood controls Earth, so Earth is what I control. Another Wood is the same as me.

![Day master element map for Jia Wood: Water and Metal point in, Fire and Earth point out, Wood sits alongside](https://multifate.com/images/guides/bazi/figures/day-master-support-en-v1-1200x608.webp)

Arrows point into Jia from Water \(generates me\) and Metal \(controls me\), and out from Jia to Fire and Earth; each label also names its traditional group\. It maps relationships and does not score strength\.

Traditional terms group these as Resource, Peers, Output, Wealth and Power, then split each by yin and yang into the [BaZi ten gods](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/ten-gods). Wealth here names the element I control; one Earth character says nothing about anyone's income.

| Relationship to the day master | Element for Jia Wood | Traditional group |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Generates me | Water | Resource |
| Same as me | Wood | Peers |
| I generate | Fire | Output |
| I control | Earth | Wealth |
| Controls me | Metal | Power (Direct Officer, Seven Killings) |

> **What the tool shows** The free calculator has no ten gods panel, so you read these relationships yourself from the stems it shows.

## Why does the same stem change relationship?

Take two hypothetical charts. One has Jia as the day stem and Ren elsewhere; the other has Bing as the day stem and the same Ren. Ren is Water in both. Water generates the first day master and controls the second, so the change comes from the reference, and Ren has no single relationship label that fits everyone.

![The stem Ren read against two day masters: Indirect Resource to Jia, Seven Killings to Bing](https://multifate.com/images/guides/bazi/figures/reference-shift-en-v1-1200x608.webp)

Follow each arrow from Ren to the day master\. Water generates Wood and both stems are yang, so Ren is Indirect Resource to Jia; Water controls Fire, again both yang, so Ren is Seven Killings to Bing\.

The same logic runs the other way. From Jia, Bing is what I generate; from Bing, Jia is what generates me. It is one Wood to Fire arrow read from its two ends. When [BaZi compatibility](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/bazi-compatibility) sets two charts side by side, each has its own day master, so one stem can relate differently to each.

1. **Write the day stem and its element**: Use the stem of the day pillar, for example Jia, which is Wood.
2. **Write the other stem and its element**: Note its position as well, for example Bing in the month stem, which is Fire.
3. **Draw the arrow between the two elements**: Find the pair in the generating or controlling order, for example Wood generates Fire.
4. **Name the relationship from the day stem's side**: Read the arrow from the day master's end, so Wood generating Fire becomes “I generate”.

## Is an element missing if no stem shows it?

The element bars answer a different question. They add the visible stems and the branches' hidden stems with different weights, so a long Wood bar describes Wood's share of that count; whether Wood is in season or rooted needs its own look. Where the bars fit in a full reading is covered in [how to read a BaZi chart](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/how-to-read-your-bazi-chart).

> **Tip** Before calling Water absent, check the hidden stems for Ren or Gui; even a true zero only describes this count. Traditional readings also weigh the season and the whole chart, and a zero is not a list of colors, objects or habits to add.

## How to note one relationship in your chart

Say you find a Jia day master and Bing as the month stem. Write down the relationship and its position, and stop there for now.

> **One relationship**
>
> Day stem: Jia, Wood
> Other stem: Bing, Fire, month stem (visible, not a hidden stem)
> Arrow: Wood generates Fire
> Relationship: I generate (Output)
> Weight in the whole chart: not read yet

Next, the [BaZi month pillar](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/day-master-and-month) adds the season, and the question of a [strong vs weak day master](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/day-master-strength) weighs support against what drains or controls it. Each step adds a condition: a lookup names the elements, an arrow names the relationship, and the rest of the chart supplies the context.

## Common questions about the day master element

### Does the element with the largest share represent me?

No. The day stem decides the day master, while element shares summarize all four pillars. A chart with the most Water can still have a Jia Wood day master.

### If none of the eight characters is Water, is Water missing?

Check the hidden stems first: no visible Water does not rule out Ren or Gui inside a branch. Then say which count you mean.

### Does a controlling relationship mean people get along badly?

No. Controlling is a directional category in a traditional system. A real relationship depends on the people, their circumstances and how they actually deal with each other.

### Are Jia and Yi day masters the same element?

Yes, both are Wood. Jia is yang and Yi is yin, and that difference changes the names among the ten gods, not the element.
