BaZi luck cycles are ten-year periods, each with its own stem and branch, counted from a calculated starting point called Qi Yun rather than from the day you were born. The birth chart stays the reference: a cycle is read against it and never rewrites it.

**Key points**

- A BaZi luck cycle is a ten-year interval with its own stem-branch pair, counted from Qi Yun, not from birth.
- The birth chart never changes; each luck pillar is read against the natal day master.
- A row gives a start, the next start and a pair; check which of the two cycles the source gives the changeover instant to (in this guide's example, the new one).
- Forward and reverse change the order of the pairs, never the direction of time.
- The free BaZi calculator shows the birth chart, not a luck cycle table.

## What are BaZi luck cycles?

A BaZi reading can use three time layers, all written in stem-branch notation: the natal chart from the birth record, ten-year luck cycles beside it, and single years. The natal chart stays the reference, and no later label replaces its day pillar.

![BaZi luck cycles as the middle layer between the natal pillars and single years](https://multifate.com/images/guides/bazi/figures/luck-layers-en-v1-1200x608.webp)

Read from top to bottom: the natal chart, the ten\-year luck cycles, then single years\. A concept, not dates calculated for anyone\.

- **Natal chart** (Birth chart): The four pillars, or three without a birth hour, from the birth record. It is the reference and is never rewritten.
- **Luck cycle** (Da Yun): A ten-year interval counted from Qi Yun. Its stem-branch pair is the luck pillar.
- **Annual pillar** (Liu Nian): The pair for a single year, read inside the cycle it falls in.
- **Qi Yun**: The calculated start of the first cycle: not the birthday, and not one age for everyone.

The same characters can appear in a birth column and in a cycle row, with different roles. Copy each pair with its label, so a cycle pair is never mistaken for a birth pillar. If the natal fields are new to you, start with [how to read a BaZi chart](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/how-to-read-your-bazi-chart).

## When does the first luck cycle start?

The first cycle starts at Qi Yun, a calculated point, not at birth or at an age shared by everyone. Qi Yun comes from the interval between birth and the next or previous solar-term entry. Methods differ in how they convert that interval into years and in the precision they keep.

![A time axis with the stretch from birth to Qi Yun marked apart from the first two ten\-year luck cycles](https://multifate.com/images/guides/bazi/figures/luck-first-cycle-en-v1-1200x608.webp)

The shaded stretch from birth to Qi Yun is not a ten\-year cycle, and its length differs from chart to chart\. Luck cycle 1 begins at Qi Yun\.

Many traditional methods count the days between birth and the nearest solar term, forwards for a man born in a yang year or a woman born in a yin year and backwards otherwise, and turn every three days into one year, so a gap of nine days puts the start near age three.

Most start ages fall between birth and ten. Check which rule your source states.

So the birth year alone cannot fix one starting age. Tables also write the start in different forms, and each needs its own check:

*How a table may show the start*

| What the table shows | What to check before comparing |
| --- | --- |
| A date | Does the source name its Qi Yun method and the birth details it used? |
| An age, such as 5 | Is it elapsed age, nominal age or another display convention? |
| Years only, such as 2030 to 2039 | Year precision only: it cannot fix the day the cycle changes |

Some tables also list the stretch before Qi Yun. Its place at the top or on the left does not make it a full ten-year cycle. If the source leaves a gap unexplained, leave it open rather than filling in dates yourself.

## How to read one row of a luck cycle table

Read a row as one interval: its start, its end and the pair that belongs to it. A pair copied without its interval says less than the whole row. If the table gives years only, keep that precision in your notes.

![Two luck cycles starting 1 May 2030 and 1 May 2040, with the start instant given to the new cycle](https://multifate.com/images/guides/bazi/figures/luck-timeline-en-v1-1200x608.webp)

Hypothetical dates, calculated for no one\. Here the start instant belongs to the new cycle, and the ten cells under the first cycle are its single years\.

Here 2035 lies in the first cycle, and 1 May 2040 is already in the second. The earlier cycle ends just before the next one begins, so no instant falls in two rows. With a real table, follow the boundary rule and the precision the source states.

*What to copy from one row*

| Field to copy | Question to check |
| --- | --- |
| Qi Yun start | A date, an instant or only an age? |
| First cycle's pair | In a luck cycle column or a natal column? |
| Next cycle's start | Does the source say which cycle owns the boundary? |
| Calculation basis | Can you check the birth inputs and the method? |

## How to read one luck pillar against your chart

A luck pillar is the stem-branch pair tied to one cycle, stem above and branch below. Read it against the natal day master, which is the same in every cycle. Below, the day master is 甲 (Jia, Wood) and the luck pillar is 丙寅 (Bing Yin).

![Day master 甲 beside the luck pillar 丙寅: 丙 is Eating God, and 寅 holds the hidden stems 甲, 丙 and 戊](https://multifate.com/images/guides/bazi/figures/luck-pillar-pair-en-v1-1200x608.webp)

The day master 甲 stays as the birth chart records it\. Measured from 甲, 丙 is Eating God, and 寅 holds 甲 \(Friend\), 丙 \(Eating God\) and 戊 \(Indirect Wealth\)\.

1. **Split the pair**: Write 丙 above and 寅 below, with the cycle's dates beside them.
2. **Keep the reference**: The day master comes from the natal chart: 甲 here, and 甲 in every cycle.
3. **Read the stem**: 丙 is Fire, and Wood generates Fire. From a 甲 day master, the [BaZi ten gods](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/ten-gods) call 丙 Eating God.
4. **Read the branch**: 寅 holds 甲, 丙 and 戊; read them separately as Wood, Fire and Earth. [BaZi hidden stems](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/hidden-stems) explains how a branch holds them.
5. **Check the scope**: Ask whether a comment covers the whole cycle or a single year inside it.

A source may show 甲子 as the day pillar and 丙寅 in a cycle column: 甲子 stays the natal day pillar, and 丙寅 belongs to that source's cycle. The example names relationships only; a claim about work or relationships in that decade needs further interpretation. For the day master's own element, see the [day master element](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/day-master-elements) guide.

## Why do two luck cycle tables disagree?

1. **Collect the birth details**: Birth date, calendar, local time, time zone and any corrections. [How to calculate BaZi](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/how-to-check) covers each input.
2. **Compare the Qi Yun method and direction**: Compare the method and the forward or reverse order each source states. If a source does not disclose them, note that the comparison cannot be finished from what is visible.
3. **Align the age notation**: Two different ages can name the same start under different conventions.
4. **Compare boundary precision**: Check whether each table gives an instant, a date or years only.
5. **Change one thing at a time**: Keep the first result, change one supported condition at a time and record what stays unresolved, instead of picking the more favorable table.

> **If the birth time is unknown** An unknown birth hour leaves the natal chart with three pillars, and a cycle table built on it keeps that uncertainty. Do not compare it with a four-pillar result as if the conditions matched. [BaZi without a birth time](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/birth-time-unknown)

An exact minute, a known two-hour period and an unknown time carry different amounts of information. If a table fills in an hour nobody recorded, any comparison that uses the hour pillar is conditional.

Forward and reverse set the order of the pairs, not the direction of time: in a reverse sequence, the second cycle still starts after the first. The sequence begins one step from the [BaZi month pillar](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/day-master-and-month) and moves one pair at a time.

*Order only. Which direction a chart follows is not covered here.*

| Direction | Next three pairs after 丙寅 |
| --- | --- |
| Forward | 丁卯, 戊辰, 己巳 |
| Reverse | 乙丑, 甲子, 癸亥 |

## Can the calculator show your luck cycles?

> **What the tool shows** The free calculator shows the birth chart and its calculation receipt. It does not show a luck cycle table. [free BaZi calculator](https://multifate.com/tools/bazi)

Check the natal side there before you read a cycle table from another source. It shows:

- The birth pillars: four with a known time, three without
- The hidden stems in each pillar card
- The day master
- Five-element percentages for a complete four-pillar result
- The calculation receipt with the inputs used

With an unknown time it shows three pillars and the day master, without an hour pillar or element totals. The noon anchor in the receipt is internal, not a birth time. A site that shows more cannot recover what the birth record lacks.

## What a new luck cycle can and cannot tell you

![Soft light falling across a blank scroll partly unrolled on warm paper](https://multifate.com/images/guides/bazi/scenes/scroll-light-v1-1200x675.webp)

A change of cycle is a line drawn by calculation, not an event\.

The word luck promises more than a row of dates can support. A calculation gives an interval a traditional label. Whether a job or a relationship goes well depends on real circumstances.

> **Where the reading stops** A cycle boundary marks a change in the calculated period. It is not evidence that something happens on that day.

Knowing the cycle's pair tells you what an interpretation is about. It still has to say:

- Which natal positions it uses
- Which relationships it relies on
- Why those relationships support its claim

Say a table changes cycles in the year you receive a job offer. The change does not tell you whether to accept; the offer's terms and your own situation do. If you reflect on it in traditional terms, keep it specific and tentative.

## Keep a luck cycle note you can check

A short note keeps a table tied to its source, so a later comparison has something specific to check.

> **Luck cycle note**
>
> Birth record used:
> Table source, Qi Yun method, forward or reverse:
> Qi Yun as a date, an age or both:
> This cycle: start, next start, pair:
> Still unresolved:

If the characters are unfamiliar, [BaZi five elements](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/five-elements) shows which element each belongs to. As you read on, keep three roles apart: the birth pillar, the period being examined, and the interpretation someone proposes.

## BaZi luck cycles: common questions

### At what age does the first luck cycle start?

There is no single age. It depends on the Qi Yun calculation, so read the start the table states: a date, an age or both.

### Do luck cycles start on the day you are born?

No. They start at Qi Yun, a calculated point. If a table lists the stretch before Qi Yun, that stretch is not a full ten-year cycle.

### Does “starts at age 5” mean my fifth birthday?

Not automatically. Check the table's age convention and its start date, and keep an unexplained age at its own precision instead of turning it into a birthday.

### Do my four pillars change when a new luck cycle begins?

No. The natal chart is never rewritten, and each luck pillar is read against it.

### Does a new luck cycle guarantee a change in my life?

No. A boundary changes a calculated interval, not events. A real decision needs circumstances you can verify.
