# What is BaZi? Four Pillars of Destiny explained

BaZi, also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a Chinese astrology tradition that writes a birth year, month, day and hour as four pairs of Chinese characters, eight in all. You can check each pair against the calendar rules that produced it. What the tradition says those characters mean is a separate question, and it helps to keep the two apart.

## What is BaZi? Four pairs, eight characters

Each pillar is a heavenly stem written above an earthly branch. Four pillars give eight characters, which is what ba zi means. The Hong Kong Observatory describes the same calendar notation: the year, month, day and hour each written as a stem-branch pair, and the four pairs together called the Eight Characters.

Go by the column labels, not the left-to-right order: some sites print the same pillars in reverse. A result may also add hidden stems, element totals and notes around the pairs. Those describe the four positions; they are not extra characters or a fifth pillar.

- **Heavenly stem**: The upper character of a pillar, one of ten stems such as Jia 甲.
- **Earthly branch**: The lower character of a pillar, one of twelve branches such as Zi 子.
- **Pillar**: One labeled stem-branch pair: year, month, day or hour.
- **Day master**: The heavenly stem of the day pillar; in the example above, Jia 甲.

## The Four Pillars of Destiny: year, month, day, hour

Each pillar is worked out separately, so a zodiac animal or a lunar month number tells you only a little about the chart.

The month branch follows a solar-term interval, so the lunar month number cannot stand in for the month pillar. The day stem, called the [day master](https://multifate.com/guides/bazi/day-master), is the reference for comparing other stems and branches in traditional readings. Find it in the day pillar before checking its element.

A solid mark is the sectional term that opens each month; the dotted principal term inside it does not change the month\. This is why the month pillar follows solar terms, not the lunar month number\.

## What is a BaZi chart built from?

Start with these four pieces of information, using the detail your birth record supports.

- The birth date, exactly as it was written.
- The calendar it was written in: solar (Gregorian) or lunar, with the leap-month setting when the record names a leap month.
- The time, only as precisely as the record gives it: an exact clock time, a two-hour period (shichen), or unknown.
- The birthplace time zone, as an IANA name such as Asia/Seoul.

Enter only the precision the record supports. A precise minute typed over a vague family memory adds detail the record never had. The zone your browser fills in is the setting of your device, so check it against the birthplace.

> **Tip** The same written numbers mean a different day in the other calendar, so a lunar date typed into solar fields gives another chart.

## How do time zone and correction change a chart?

The path a birth record takes: date, calendar, time precision, birthplace time zone, an optional correction you preview first, then the pillars with a calculation receipt\.

The calculator applies the birthplace zone’s historical clock rules, including daylight saving. Select the birthplace’s IANA time zone without adding or subtracting an hour yourself. If a local clock time occurred twice, choose the occurrence supported by the record.

Coordinate correction is optional. It takes decimal coordinates only, with no city lookup, and previews a true-solar-time shift in minutes. If the shift crosses into another day or two-hour period, a warning says it can change a pillar, and the correction is applied only after you confirm it. Note whether you used it.

The calculation receipt lists the input record, calendar conversion, IANA zone, UTC offset used, time precision, any correction applied and the engine version. Before looking up an unfamiliar character, check that the calendar conversion in the receipt shows the date your record gives.

## Is a BaZi chart a prediction?

“The day stem is Jia” is a fact about the chart. What that says about a person is a further claim, and it needs its own reasoning.

An element percentage is a share of a weighted count of visible and hidden stems. It is not a probability, and it does not measure a person.

When two sites disagree, compare the date and time conditions first, then the four pairs, then any summaries. A different percentage is not always a different pillar, and a more confident paragraph is not a better calculation.

> **Where the reading stops** A calculated pair or an element share is not proof of a future event, and these guides do not treat it as one.

## Which question are you trying to answer?

Some questions lead to a field on the page. Others need information the chart does not hold.

- Why is there no hour pillar? The time was entered as unknown. The result shows three pillars with their hidden stems and the day master, leaving out the hour pillar and element totals. Do not pick a time to fill the gap.
- What do the element bars mean? They show each element’s share of a weighted count of visible and hidden stems. They are not personality scores and cannot establish day-master strength on their own.
- Comparing two people’s charts? Check each birth record and its pillars first. This tool does not provide a compatibility score, and one character cannot establish how a relationship will work.
- Will a job offer work out? The chart supplies terms, not the facts of the offer; that decision needs the real circumstances.

### What does BaZi mean?

Eight characters: the stem and branch of each of the four pillars for the birth year, month, day and hour. The Hong Kong Observatory uses the same name for these pairs.

### Is BaZi the same as the Four Pillars of Destiny?

Yes, it is one chart. BaZi names the framework and its eight characters; Four Pillars names the year, month, day and hour layout that holds them.

### Does the birth year give me the whole chart?

No. A year label covers one position. The other pillars come from the full date and time, and a result with an unknown time says what is missing.

### Do I need an exact birth time for BaZi?

An exact minute is not required. Select a two-hour period if you know it. With time unknown, the tool shows date-based year, month and day pillars, their hidden stems and the day master, but no hour pillar or element totals. Near solar-term or day boundaries, recheck the pillars when a reliable time becomes available.
