BaZi day master: how to find your day stem

What is a BaZi day master?

Your day master is the heavenly stem of the day pillar: one character, not the whole stem-branch pair. In the free BaZi calculator it appears twice, first as the stem in the Day pillar and again in the separate day master area, next to its element name. The second display repeats that one character only.

The Hong Kong Observatory describes the calendar notation behind a chart as pairs of heavenly stems and earthly branches, one pair each for the year, month, day and hour. The day pillar is one of those four, and the what is BaZi guide walks through all four.

Day masterrì zhǔ 日主: Also called: day stem; The heavenly stem of the day pillar, and the reference the other stems in the chart are compared with.
Day pillarrì zhù 日柱: The stem and branch pair for the day of birth. Its upper character, the stem, is the day master.

Which ten stems can be a day master?

There are ten possible day stems, two for each of the five elements: one yang and one yin. Yin and yang name the two stems inside one element; they are not a ranking of people.

The ten heavenly stems grouped by element into five pairs, each with a yang stem and a yin stem — Wood: Jia 甲 and Yi 乙. Fire: Bing 丙 and Ding 丁. Earth: Wu 戊 and Ji 己. Metal: Geng 庚 and Xin 辛. Water: Ren 壬 and Gui 癸. The first of each pair is yang.

Keep the character in your notes when comparing sources, because romanizations differ. The BaZi five elements table lets you check which element each stem belongs to before comparing it with the day master.

Is your day master the same as your year animal?

No. Three labels answer three questions. The year animal comes from the year branch, the day master comes from the day stem, and the element bars add up weighted contributions from all four pillars.

A chart with a Jia day stem stays a Jia Wood chart even when another element's bar is longer, as Earth is in this example. No step in finding the day master asks you to pick the longest bar.

What do you read after the day master?

Once you have the day master, any other stem can be compared with it. The same stem gets a different name when the day master changes, so a relationship name means nothing without the day master it was measured from.

The stem Ren read against two day masters, Jia and Bing, with a different relationship name for each — Ren 壬 read from a Jia day master is Indirect Resource: Water generates Wood, both yang. Read from a Bing day master, the same Ren is Seven Killings: Water controls Fire, both yang.

Ten-god names compare another stem with the day master using element relationships and whether their yin or yang matches. Always note the reference stem.
Read the season from the month branch and check the solar-term boundary. A lunar month number cannot substitute for the month branch.
A strength assessment considers the season, roots, support and restraint together. The longest element bar cannot settle it, and the free calculator gives no strong-or-weak label.

Why do two calculators give different day masters?

Usually because they worked from different dates. The day master is the stem of the day pillar, and the day pillar follows the date the calculation used. Any of these can change that date:

The calendar: a lunar birthday typed into solar fields, or a leap month left unmarked, gives another day.
The date itself: compare what was entered with the birth record, not with a date you remember.
A true solar time correction: it can move a time near a day boundary into the previous or next day. When the date changes, the day pillar changes with it, and the hour pillar may change too.

Can you find your day master without a birth time?

Yes. With Birth time unknown selected, the calculator gives the year, month and day pillars and the day master. The hour pillar and the five-element percentages are left out, and the missing hour is not guessed.

Common questions about the day master

Does my day master change with luck cycles?

No. The day master is the stem of your birth day pillar, so it stays the same for life. Luck cycles are separate stem-branch pairs that the tradition reads alongside the birth chart.

Does the largest element percentage decide my day master?

No. The day stem decides it. Another element can have the larger share in the weighted totals while the day master keeps its own element.

Is a yin day master weaker than a yang one?

Not by itself. Yin and yang tell the two stems of one element apart; whether a day master counts as strong or weak is judged from the whole chart.

Is the day master the whole day pillar or one character?

One character: the heavenly stem. The day master area repeats that stem, not the stem-branch pair.
