BaZi five elements: how the chart totals work

Multifate · English · Content reviewed

Five unglazed clay dishes in a gentle arc holding wood shavings, charcoal, earth, a bronze bead and clear water

The BaZi five elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, the five categories every stem in your chart is sorted into. An element bar can include contributions that are not among the four visible stems, because the hidden stems inside the branches are counted too.

Key points

  • The five elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, and each has two heavenly stems: Jia and Yi are Wood, for example.
  • Multifate's totals count 1 for each visible stem and 0.5, 0.3 and 0.2 for each branch's hidden stems in order, so counting only the eight visible characters can give a different result.
  • Each percentage is rounded on its own, so the five numbers may not add up to exactly 100. In the sample chart they add up to 99.
  • Without a birth hour you get three pillars and the day master, but no element totals.
  • A low or zero share describes this count. It is not an instruction to add that element.

What are the BaZi five elements?

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water are the categories the calculator uses, and the calendar glossary of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan describes the same five. An element bar adds up the chart symbols assigned to one category. It measures a share under a counting rule, not a substance inside a person.

Find the element beside your BaZi day master first, then read the element display on its own. A Wood day master does not make every character Wood, and several Water contributions do not turn the day stem into a Water stem.

Which stems belong to each element?

Each element has two heavenly stems. Find the stem itself before you pick an element; the characters stay in the table so you can match different spellings of their names. A pillar's branch has its own stems on a separate Hidden stems line, and those are not the stem above it.

Wood 木Jia 甲 and Yi 乙
Fire 火Bing 丙 and Ding 丁
Earth 土Wu 戊 and Ji 己
Metal 金Geng 庚 and Xin 辛
Water 水Ren 壬 and Gui 癸

How do the five elements relate to each other?

The chart rules distinguish two relationships between the categories: generating and controlling. Both are traditional classification rules.

  • Generating: Wood to Fire, Fire to Earth, Earth to Metal, Metal to Water, and Water back to Wood.
  • Controlling: Wood to Earth, Earth to Water, Water to Fire, Fire to Metal, and Metal back to Wood.

Read each arrow from its starting element to its target, one cycle at a time. The two cycles are separate, and neither shows element percentages.

With Wood as the reference, Water generates it and Fire is what it generates. These arrows can be followed from the element of your own day master; ten-god names also use these relationships together with yin and yang. The free calculator has no ten-god or compatibility panel. The arrows describe a symbolic classification; a claim about people or events needs evidence beyond the arrow.

How are BaZi element totals weighted?

Multifate counts 1 for each visible heavenly stem. Each branch adds its hidden stems at 0.5, 0.3 and 0.2 in their listed order, and a branch with fewer than three adds only the ones it has. The branch's own broad element gets no extra unit, which is why counting the eight visible characters by eye can give a different result.

Two single pillars counted by element: Jia-Yin gives Wood 1.5, Fire 0.3 and Earth 0.2; Jia-Zi gives Wood 1.0 and Water 0.5
Follow the arrow from each branch to its hidden stems. Yin holds Jia, Bing and Wu, so Jia-Yin adds Wood 1 + 0.5, Fire 0.3 and Earth 0.2; Zi holds only Gui.

Take Jia-Zi on its own: Jia adds 1 to Wood, and Gui hidden in Zi adds 0.5 to Water. That explains two contributions, not a complete birth chart or anyone's balance; all four pillars go in before any percentage exists. BaZi hidden stems explains where the extra stems come from.

Why don't the five percentages add up to 100?

Each element's weighted amount is divided by the sum of all five. The number you see is rounded to the nearest whole percent on its own, while the bar uses the unrounded share. The five element percentages therefore need not add up to exactly 100, and a small gap does not mean a pillar disappeared or the input was rejected.

Sample chart element counts beside their exact shares and the whole percentages shown, which add up to 99
Sample chart Geng-Wu, Ji-Mao, Jia-Zi, Bing-Yin (庚午 己卯 甲子 丙寅): Wood 2.0, Fire 1.8, Earth 1.5, Metal 1.0 and Water 0.5, a total of 6.8. Rounded one by one, the shares show as 29, 26, 22, 15 and 7 percent, which add up to 99.

The total you divide by depends on the method. Another service may count only the visible characters, use other hidden-stem weights or add adjustments, so compare methods before comparing numbers. A share does not establish whether the day master is strong or weak: that interpretation also needs the month context, roots, relationships and the rule used to weigh them.

Why are there no totals without a birth time?

With “Birth time unknown” selected, the calculator returns three pillars and the day master and leaves out the element totals. A missing hour can change the set of contributions, and an empty display makes that limit visible instead of passing a partial count off as a four-pillar balance. You can still study the stems and branches that are shown.

One birth date with the time known, four pillars and element bars, and with the time unknown, three pillars and no bars
In this example the day master is the same in both rows; the unknown-time row has no hour pillar or element shares. Noon is an internal reference for the calculation, not a confirmed birth time.

When a reliable time turns up, recalculate all pillars, especially near a solar-term or day boundary. Keep both calculation receipts. Label candidate times as separate cases and never average their percentages into a confirmed result. Retain each receipt’s time zone and correction. BaZi without a birth time covers the three-pillar result.

How to trace a percentage back to your chart

Open a complete result in the free BaZi calculator and follow the numbers back to the characters.

  1. List the visible stems

Write down the four heavenly stems and give each 1 in its element, using the stem table above.

  2. Add the hidden stems

For each branch, read its Hidden stems line in order and add 0.5, 0.3 and 0.2 to their elements.

  3. Total each element

Add up Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water separately.

  4. Divide by the sum of all five

Each element's total over the grand total gives its exact share, which is the length of its bar.

  5. Round each element on its own

Round every share to the nearest whole percent. The five results may not add up to exactly 100.

If another calculator gives a different result, find the first step where the two results differ. Check the birth inputs before anything else with how to calculate BaZi.

Where two results can differ

  • Stems: the same four characters?
  • Hidden stems: the same list for each branch?
  • Order: the same sequence inside each list?
  • Weights: 1 per stem, then 0.5, 0.3 and 0.2?
  • Rounding: each element on its own?

Common questions about the BaZi five elements

Why is my day master's element not the longest bar?

The day master is one stem, identified by its position in the day pillar. The bars add weighted contributions from all four pillars, so another element can take the larger share.

Why do element percentages differ between calculators?

Usually because they count differently. Some tools count only the visible characters and others weight hidden stems differently; Multifate uses the weights above. Check the birth inputs too, since different inputs change the pillars themselves.

Should I enter an estimated hour to see element totals?

Keep an unknown time marked as unknown. If you try an estimated hour, label it as a hypothetical case and keep the original three-pillar result beside it; a complete display does not confirm the estimate.

Does 0% of an element mean my chart lacks something?

It means that element received no contribution under this counting rule. It describes the calculation and is not an instruction to add anything.
