Your BaZi Ten Gods are listed pillar by pillar, with a count of each and a link to what it means. A birth time is optional, and gender is not needed.
What are the Ten Gods in BaZi?
The Ten Gods (十神, shi shen) name how each stem in your chart relates to your Day Master, the stem of the day pillar: Companion, Rob Wealth, Eating God, Hurting Officer, Indirect Wealth, Direct Wealth, Seven Killings, Direct Officer, Indirect Resource and Direct Resource. The Day Master itself has none; it is the reference point.
Each name pairs two things: the five-element relationship to the Day Master (the same element, the one it produces, the one it controls, the one that controls it, or the one that produces it) and whether the yin or yang matches.
They are read for themes such as work, money, relationships and self-expression, always in the context of the pillar they sit in and whether they are a stem or a hidden stem.
Example: BaZi Ten Gods of a man born in 1990
The example is a man born on May 15, 1990 at 2:30 pm in Shanghai (a fictional person). It uses the calculator above, so you can see where to start reading the table.
| Pillar | Stem and branch | Ten God of the stem | Ten Gods of the hidden stems |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year pillar | Geng Wu (庚午) | Companion (Geng 庚) |
|
| Month pillar | Xin Si (辛巳) | Rob Wealth (Xin 辛) |
|
| Day pillar | Geng Chen (庚辰) | Day Master (Geng 庚), the reference |
|
| Hour pillar | Gui Wei (癸未) | Hurting Officer (Gui 癸) |
|
| Ten God | Stems | Hidden stems |
|---|---|---|
| Companion | 1 | 1 |
| Rob Wealth | 1 | 0 |
| Eating God | 0 | 0 |
| Hurting Officer | 1 | 1 |
| Indirect Wealth | 0 | 0 |
| Direct Wealth | 0 | 2 |
| Seven Killings | 0 | 1 |
| Direct Officer | 0 | 2 |
| Indirect Resource | 0 | 2 |
| Direct Resource | 0 | 2 |
The Day Master of the example is Geng 庚, Metal. The Day Master has no Ten God of its own, so the table marks it as the reference.
The month pillar is Xin Si (辛巳). Its stem is Rob Wealth, and its main hidden stem Bing 丙 is Seven Killings. The month pillar is usually read first because it counts for the most.
The day branch, Chen (辰), holds Wu 戊 (Indirect Resource), Yi 乙 (Direct Wealth), Gui 癸 (Hurting Officer). One that does not show on a stem may sit in a hidden stem.
Eating God and Indirect Wealth do not appear anywhere in this example.
What each Ten God means
Each one is a relationship to the Day Master. A name alone does not make a Ten God good or bad; that depends on the whole chart.
- Companion (same element as the Day Master, same yin or yang)
- Peers and a strong sense of self. People with a lot of Companion tend to be independent and work at their own pace, suit running their own business or working alone, and like to deal with others as equals. The downside is stubbornness. It is also called Friend.
- Rob Wealth (same element as the Day Master, opposite yin or yang)
- Rivalry and drive. A competitive streak that does best where there is something to win. Loyal to their group, though money and status can turn into a contest.
- Eating God (the element the Day Master produces, same yin or yang)
- Easy self-expression and enjoying life. Relaxed, optimistic people, at home in food, making things and work that puts others at ease, and usually well liked. It is also called Food God.
- Hurting Officer (the element the Day Master produces, opposite yin or yang)
- Talent, quick wit and a dislike of being fenced in. Original and critical, suited to specialist skills, creative and performing work. They can chafe at rules and authority and say things bluntly.
- Indirect Wealth (the element the Day Master controls, same yin or yang)
- Money in motion and a wide network. Generous and sociable, good at sales, trade and deals. Income can swing, and news and opportunities tend to arrive through people.
- Direct Wealth (the element the Day Master controls, opposite yin or yang)
- Steady income and careful management. Honest, practical and dependable, suited to finance, administration and any work that rewards patient saving. Keeping promises matters to them.
- Seven Killings (the element that controls the Day Master, same yin or yang)
- Pressure, drive and the nerve to face it. Decisive and happy to take on a challenge, strong in demanding or fast-moving roles, though they can come across as forceful. Traditional texts are cautious about it when nothing keeps it in check. It is also called Indirect Officer.
- Direct Officer (the element that controls the Day Master, opposite yin or yang)
- Rules, responsibility and standing. Orderly, polite and conscientious, suited to a defined role in an organization, and attentive to courtesy and clear boundaries.
- Indirect Resource (the element that produces the Day Master, same yin or yang)
- Unconventional thinking and self-teaching. Often original and solitary, drawn to niche or specialist subjects such as research, art and esoteric study. They keep a distance and can overthink. It is also called Indirect Seal.
- Direct Resource (the element that produces the Day Master, opposite yin or yang)
- Learning and support. Calm and eager to learn, often helped by mentors and elders, suited to teaching, qualifications and research. It is also called Direct Seal.

Where a Ten God sits in the chart
- Year pillar
- Commonly read for ancestry, family background and the early years.
- Month pillar
- The framework of the chart, read for career, parents and siblings and the young adult years. It counts for the most, and the main hidden stem's Ten God is often treated as the center.
- Day pillar
- You and your spouse. Its stem is the Day Master, and its branch holds hidden stems with Ten Gods of their own.
- Hour pillar
- Children and later life.
- Stem and hidden stem
- On a stem it shows on the surface; in a hidden stem it works underneath.
Many of one Ten God, or none
One that appears often marks a theme that runs through the chart. Counting shows how often each appears; how strong it is depends on the season of birth and on roots in the branches, which this page does not grade.
One absent from the stems can still sit in a hidden stem, and one missing everywhere may show when a luck pillar or a year brings it. Missing does not mean you lack that quality.
Ten Gods in your chart and in your luck pillars
The Ten Gods in your chart are fixed at birth, while the one on a luck pillar changes about every ten years. This page lists them separately; to read a pillar, compare its Ten God with those in your chart.
The BaZi luck pillars calculator shows the Ten God of your current pillar.
How the Ten Gods are calculated
- Stems and hidden stems
- The stems of the year, month and hour pillars each get one. So do the hidden stems inside each earthly branch, with the main one marked, and the hidden stems of the day branch too.
- Hidden stems
- The page uses the widely used Chinese table of hidden stems and shows every one. Tables differ on some branches (Wu, the horse, is Ding and Ji here, and Bing, Ji and Ding in other tables), and some schools pick a single hidden stem by the days since the solar term. Results for the hidden stems can therefore differ on other sites.
- Solar terms and the year and month pillars
- The year pillar changes at Lichun (the Start of Spring) and the month pillar at each month's opening solar term. The birth moment is converted to China Standard Time (UTC+8) and compared with the term's time. For a birth near a term, the time you enter can change the year or month pillar, and the results with it.
- Midnight and the 23:00 hour
- The day pillar changes at midnight, local time. A birth between 23:00 and 24:00 keeps that day for the day pillar, while the hour pillar takes its stem from the next day. This decides the Day Master, so it matters.
- If you don't know your birth time
- Noon stands in for the missing time, and the Ten Gods of the year, month and day pillars are shown. There is no hour pillar, and a birth on the day of a solar term may change the month pillar.
- No longitude correction
- The clock time you enter is used as it is, with no true solar time or longitude correction. Sites that apply one can show a different hour pillar, and different results with it.
- Why sites show different Ten Gods
- Differences mostly come from the hidden-stem table, longitude correction, the solar term time and the names: Seven Killings is also called Indirect Officer, and Direct Resource is also called Direct Seal. This page lists its assumptions above.
- A check you can run
- Compare the example with your own chart or another site. For a man born on May 15, 1990 at 2:30 pm in Shanghai, the Day Master is Geng Metal (庚金) and the Ten God of the month stem is Rob Wealth.
BaZi Ten Gods: common questions
- Can you calculate my Ten Gods from my birth date and time?

- How many Ten Gods are there in BaZi?
- Ten: Companion, Rob Wealth, Eating God, Hurting Officer, Indirect Wealth, Direct Wealth, Seven Killings, Direct Officer, Indirect Resource and Direct Resource. Each pairs an element relationship to the Day Master with the same or opposite yin or yang.

Enter your birth details to see them in your own chart.
- Which Ten Gods do I have the most of?
- The count table under your chart shows how often each appears, among the stems and among the hidden stems. Appearing often is not the same as being strong: strength is read from the season of birth and from roots in the whole chart, which this page does not grade.
- Is Seven Killings bad in BaZi?
- No, not by name. Seven Killings is about drive and facing pressure, and whether it helps depends on the rest of the chart.
- What is the difference between Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth?
- Direct Wealth is regular income you manage, and Indirect Wealth is money that moves through deals and contacts. Both are the element the Day Master controls: Direct Wealth has the opposite yin or yang to the Day Master, Indirect Wealth the same.
- Do I read only my Day Master, or all four pillars?
- All four. The Day Master is the reference point, and every other stem and hidden stem carries a Ten God, with the month pillar usually counting the most.
- Does a missing Ten God mean I lack that quality?
- No. It may sit in a hidden stem, or appear when a luck pillar or a year brings it.
- Why do different BaZi sites show different Ten Gods?
- Mostly because of hidden stems, longitude correction and names. This page uses the common Chinese hidden-stem table, no longitude correction, and the names Seven Killings (also Indirect Officer) and Direct Resource (also Direct Seal).
